The Cool Networking Group of the Week
Just the Facts»
Question:When is a “leads” group not a leads group?
Answer:When it has evolved to become group that regularly influences the entire world in a positive way.
I joined Rotary for a simple and personal reason. It has to do with Polio. My wife, who is from Colombia, has permanent muscle paralysis to her right leg from a Polio infection when she was a baby. This attracted me to Rotary because Rotary’s most ambitious project ever is the eradication of Polio. This effort is global and recently has attracted $355 million in challenge grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It was Rotary’s history, that surprised me. I was going through new member orientation and learning the history of Rotary when I discovered how much the organization had evolved. continued…

There are two emotions that motivate us – fear and excitement. Most people choose fear. – Brad Sugars
We have this enormous stress response system that reacts to fear. It developed over many thousands of years – most of them when people’s lives were constantly in real danger. Statistically, where I live, most adults get through their lives without ever having to physically defend themselves or run from a real physical threat. We never, or rarely, have a real reason to be in “fight or flight” mode.
Fight or flight is expensive. I’ve read that cell repair, cell division, digestion, higher order reasoning and emotion all get shut down in fight or flight. Stress even shortens our life span. continued…

If you’ve ever gone to the cupboard, looked around and yelled, “Honey, I can’t find the salt” and then had Honey reach around you and pick up the salt from right in front of your face – then you know how I feel.
If you are a mammal – and I know that most of you are, then you have a scotoma in each of your eyes. Nature gives us these two blind spots and, often, we give ourselves even more. This is called self-limiting thinking or, more simply, head trash. Continued… Read the rest of this entry »

We do business with people we know, like and trust.
“Know” implies you are out there investing time getting to know people and letting them get to know you. It means people want to get to know you because you are not being pushy. To accomplish this you must make the effort to sincerely get to know people first. Learn to ask questions and minimize talking about yourself.
“Like” follows directly behind “know” in that you are friendly, fun and/or interesting in conversation. Being “likable” is certainly in the eye of the beholder but there are plenty of resources if you want to improve your “likability”. Start with Dale Carnegie and you’ll be in great hands. Check out “The Platinum Rule” to take it to the next level.
“Trust” is the foundation. I like this simple statement (“like, know and trust”) but I find it more helpful to replace the word “trust” with the phrase “judge to be trustworthy”. Continued… Read the rest of this entry »

Soirée [swah-rey] –noun
an evening party or social gathering, esp. one held for a particular purpose: a musical soiree.
I knew the word. I knew that I was at one. I just couldn’t get close enough to it with my spelling such that the spell checker could take me all the way home.
I found the correct letters at that old internet standard dictionary.com. If you are not familiar with that old standard then maybe you don’t know another of my favorites – so check out IMDB.com too.
Homegrown [hohm-grohn] –adjective
1. grown or produced at home or in a particular region for local consumption: homegrown tomatoes.
2. native or indigenous to or characteristic of a region:homegrown musicians
This homegrown soirée was a blast! Music, drinks, food and over 120 business networkers in a great venue. They need to do this more often. Maybe with a little encouragement they’ll do it again. Continued…

10 Things Not To Do When Networking
It’s not just you. I’ve done these things all too frequently. Writing them out (okay typing them out) helps me be more mindful when I’m out networking. Maybe reading them will help you be more mindful too!
1. Stand in one place and talk to folks you already know.
It is okay to spend a little time reconnecting and reinforcing existing relationships – just make sure you excuse yourself and start some new ones too. Tip: Set a goal around how many new relationships you want to start.
2. Ignore the lost loners.
Remember when you ventured out to your first networking group? Perhaps you were the nervous, awkward person standing by yourself. If you’ve been there you know it is no fun. Tip: Go up and warmly greet them. Introduce them to a few people you know. You will be top in their minds for your business category! Continued…

Just the Facts»
Unique in the animal kingdom of local networking and displaying exotic characteristics this unique beast caught the eye of this networker. With flashy displays like “the hot seat” and “the five minute business plan” this primate really struts its stuff.
Fun is a big part of cool and the central fun of this weeks exemplary networking creature is the “guest drinker.” The guest drinker is a business owner who, while imbibing his or her favorite beverage, is subjected to a friendly, if sometimes pointed, business examination by the groups organizer, Don Larson. Tonight, a “come by it honestly” owner of a “Green” business was the guest drinker.

You just have to listen to some folks. Joe Girard is one of them. Here’s why:
- Joe sold more retail “big ticket” items “one-at-a-time” than any other sales person in any retail industry including houses, boats motor homes, insurance, automobiles, etc.
- Joe is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as “World’s Greatest Salesman” (This record has not been broken.)
- Joe averaged six new retail automobile sales a day (no used automobiles)
- Joe owns the record for the most new retail sales in one day (18 automobiles)
- Joe owns the record for the most new retail sales in one month (174 automobiles) …Continued Read the rest of this entry »

The Cool Networking Group of the Week
Just the Facts»
Not what I expected. Packed room, breakfast buffet, a real buzz and in a beautiful facility. Painting companies, movers, construction, web site builders and business organizers are, surprisingly, in attendance.
Men are the minority in this crowd of 60 or 70 networkers. I’m having fun and am completely charmed by the spirit of this group. You can’t, I realize, judge a networking group by its name.
The creator of this lovely scene has things well in hand. She is, at once, all business and charming as she greets members and makes first time visitors feel welcome. I’m pleased she remembers me from our first meeting at Judi Fischer’s open house. Then she says something that really makes me feel wonderful.

Conflicted! That’s how most of us feel going to a networking event. We want sales, but don’t want to be “salesy” or have someone be “salesy” to us. This conflict stops a great number of people from ever going to networking events. It makes a great many that do go feel uncomfortable and get nothing for their time.
Great networkers know the simple solution. It is in the approach and the objective. You can’t approach networking trying to hunt sales. You have to go to a networking function intending to create a chance to start new relationships. The best way to do this is to realize that many folks come to networking just as nervous as you are and that you can do something about it. You spot these folks and you put them at ease.

Just the Facts»
“Wow, these folks have energy,” I thought as I walked through the busy room towards someone I wanted to meet. I’d just learned, in fact, that someone had even brought an energy source with them tonight – more on that in a moment. I had carpooled this evening with a couple of terrific bankers and had just had a rousing conversation with a third when the level of buzz, itself, got my attention. It felt positive. I grinned – this is cool.

Networking Tips
In Networking on June 24, 2009 at 12:06 pm
The best approach to networking is to make others feel comfortable. The “Open 3″ is a way to make a conversation between 3 people open and welcoming to a 4th person.
We communicate more through body language and tone of voice than we do content. If 3 people in a conversation draw close together then anyone approaching the group will be looking at the backs of the three in the group. This is not a welcoming group posture and will likely deter all but the most determined networker.
