“Wow, these folks have energy,” I thought as I walked through the busy room towards someone I wanted to meet.  I’d just learned, in fact, that someone had even brought an energy source with them tonight – more on that in a moment. I had carpooled this evening with a couple of terrific bankers  and had just had a rousing conversation with a third when the level of buzz, itself, got my attention.  It felt positive.  I grinned – this is cool.

Networking Tip: The “Open 3″

The best approach to networking is to make others feel comfortable.  The “Open 3″ is a way to make a conversation between 3 people open and welcoming to a 4th person.

We communicate more through body language and tone of voice than we do content.  If 3 people in a conversation draw close together then anyone approaching the group will be looking at the backs of the three in the group.  This is not a welcoming group posture and will likely deter all but the most determined networker.
